Today President Biden issued his much-anticipated Executive Order on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (Executive Order 14110).
With the UK's AI Safety Summit starting in two days, it will be interesting to see the impact of the President's Order on the emerging AI regulatory and economic landscape.
The White House summary states that the Executive Order will:
Require that developers of the most powerful AI systems share their safety test results and other critical information with the U.S. government
Develop standards, tools, and tests to help ensure that AI systems are safe, secure, and trustworthy
Protect against the risks of using AI to engineer dangerous biological materials
Protect Americans from AI-enabled fraud and deception by establishing standards and best practices for detecting AI-generated content and authenticating official content
Establish an advanced cybersecurity program to develop AI tools to find and fix vulnerabilities in critical software
Order the development of a National Security Memorandum that directs further actions on AI and security
The full briefing note contains further information on how the White House is aiming to address issues around privacy, algorithmic bias, civil rights and innovation in its policy response to AI.
This is a major milestone in global AI governance, with much more activity from the Biden administration to come in the next 90 and 180 days.
It’s impact could be felt for years to come…
